BETHANY – The last time a career scoring record was broken at Southern Nazarene University, the 3-point line didn't exist yet, and SNU home games were played in the Broadhurst gymnasium across campus.
After 46 years, SNU has a new face at the top of the all-time scoring list and his name is
Jhonathan Dunn. The senior guard scored his 2,105
th career point just two minutes into the game to pass Jeff Jantz (1970-74) and become the Storm's all-time leading scorer. To make this night even better, Southern Nazarene won their ninth straight game inside the Sawyer Center as they outlasted Henderson State 71-67 in front of a thunderous crowd on "White Hot" night.
The Crimson Storm (15-6, 9-4 GAC) were coming off a sluggish weekend in Arkansas and boy did they bounce back in a big way on Thursday night. The Reddies (14-5) thumped the Storm by 19 in their house, but SNU got its revenge despite the game being relatively even. Henderson did dominate the glass, out-rebounding SNU 35-22 in the contest, but turned the ball over 21 times as the Storm got after it once again on the defensive end. Both teams shot 49 percent from the field as the Storm converted 10-of-23 (43.5%) 3-point tries while the Reddies made 6-of-15 (40%) on their end.
On top of Dunn's historic achievement, this game was stolen by senior guard
Tyler Williams. He finished with a career-high 25 points on an eye-popping 8-of-9 shooting and 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range. Williams was absolutely unguardable on Thursday, as he also added three rebounds, two assists, and two steals in a season-high 30 minutes. Dunn finished with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting while going 3-for-4 from downtown.
Depsite having just two points at halftime,
Micah Speight had a sensational second half for SNU. He finished with 13 points and added six assists and a game-high four steals. Both Speight and Dunn played all 40 minutes for head coach
Adam Bohac in the contest.
Maik Bouwer also had a great night for the Storm as he finished with six points to go along with a career-high eight rebounds.
Nick Davis got his first start in place of injured
Morris Wilson II as the freshman finished with six points and two rebounds.
The energy was high right from the opening tip. Everyone in the building knew that Dunn needed just seven points to pass Jantz and it only took him 2:17 as he scored the first eight points of the game. The Reddies, however were not going to let Dunn spoil their night as they shot 50 percent from the field in the first half as the game went back and forth. After SNU jumped out to a 21-14 lead, Henderson came back on a 17-7 run to take the lead at 31-28. The Storm roared back with a 7-1 run to take a 35-32 lead into the halftime break.
Both teams traded leads in the opening 10 minutes of the second half before Williams went wild. He scored 12 points in the second half and SNU took a 63-57 lead courtesy of a dunk from Dunn with 4:45 to play. The Storm's defense in the final five minutes secured their victory as they made life difficult for Henderson who couldn't get back into the game. Dunn's free throw with 1:45 made it a 67-60 lead as the senior locked up his 19
th 20+ point performance of the season as the Storm cruised to its ninth GAC win this season.
Southern Nazarene will be back in action at home on Saturday afternoon as they host Ouachita Baptist inside Sawyer. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
