Blossoms Spoil Streak

The Storm drop just their third GAC game of the season to Arkansas-Monticello 70-60.

MONTICELLO, Ark. - Southern Nazarene marched their way down to Monticello, Arkansas to take on the Blossoms in their annual "Blackout Night", but failed to accomplish their task as they fell 70-60 on Thursday night, ending their four-game winning streak.

The Storm (11-4, 8-3 GAC) were held to their second-lowest field goal percentage of the season as Arkansas-Monticello (11-5, 6-4 GAC) forced them to a 37.7 percent shooting clip. SNU hit on 20 of the 53 field goal shots they attempted, eight shy of the 28 UAM knocked down. However, Southern Nazarene did manage to outshoot Arkansas-Monticello from the arc as they finished at 33 percent while the Blossoms shot 30 percent.

In unusual fashion, the Storm were beat in their bread and butter, defense. UAM out-rebounded SNU 38-32 and also commanding the paint. 42 of the Blossoms' 70 points came from the paint, the most Southern Nazarene has allowed all season.

On a positive note, SNU forced UAM into 18 turnovers and blocked seven of their shots, while the bench outscored the Blossoms as well.

Jaycee Soap led the Storm as she finished with 18 points, shooting 46 percent from the floor. Soap also grabbed two steals, four rebounds, and knocked down 3-of-5 from the arc. In 19 minutes of play, Myriam Garcia scored a season-high 13 points, stole two balls, and went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Abby Niehues demanded her share of the cake as the GAC's leading shot-blocker tied her season-high of six blocks on her way to five rebounds and three points. Niehues accounted for six of the total seven SNU blocks in the game.

Sonia Sarda struggled shooting on the evening as she finished with 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting. However, Sarda made noise everywhere else as she amassed four steals, three assists, and three rebounds. Kennedy Gillette scored a cool seven points while bringing down three rebounds and dishing out too assists.

After the first quarter saw both teams tied at 15, Arkansas-Monticello posted an impressive second quarter as the score going into the break sat at 37-32. The mission was the same for the Blossoms as they still lead the Storm going into the fourth, despite allowing SNU score the same amount of points as them in third. The deficit was too great in the fourth as Southern Nazarene was unable to overcome the advantage of Arkansas-Monticello.

Southern Nazarene will continue their road trip this Saturday as they face off against Southern Arkansas (12-5, 6-5 GAC) in Magnolia, Ark. Tip-off is set for 1:00 pm.
