EDMOND, Okla. - The season opened for the Southern Nazarene University men's soccer team on Thursday night, as they headed across town to face a traditional rival in Oklahoma Christian. The game was closely contested, but when the clock hit zero, the Crimson Storm had come up just short.
SNU (0-1) generated chances, but they were unable to convert on the opportunities they created, and OC (1-0) took the match 1-0.
SNU came out quickly, firing a trio of shots and earning three corner kicks in the first eight minutes of play, but they were unable to dent the OC defense, as Eagles' goalkeeper Anthony Trabichet kept the sheet clean, and his team broke the ice in the 27th minute. 'Thomas van der Meulen cashed in a feed from Carlos Trapero to give the Eagles the lead, and that proved to be enough.
The Crimson Storm generated six of their 12 shots in the match after the goal, and they had seven shots on target in the match, but Trabichet was equal to each test, and the match ended with OC taking the 1-0 victory.
Guy Esquivel registered five shots for SNU in the match, including two on frame, and
Bence Mocsari played all 90 minutes for SNU in goal.
The storm will hit the road on Saturday, heading to Bolivar, Missouri where they will battle the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University (0-1). Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
