Turang Leads Volleyball Past SWOSU in Home Opener

BETHANY - Sometimes in sports it can be difficult to pinpoint who the most effective player is in a given game or match. On Tuesday night at the Sawyer Center, that was not the case for Southern Nazarene University in their home opening volleyball match.

Senior Bailee Turang blasted a match-high 17 kills, and she posted her fourth double-double of the season by adding 11 digs, all while attacking the ball at a .316 clip as SNU (7-2, 1-0 GAC) swept away the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs (4-6, 0-1 GAC) in straight sets.

The first set was by far the most tightly contested. Neither team held a lead of more than two points in the stanza, and the lead changed hands six times with 13 additional tie scores. The biggest difference for the Crimson Storm came on the attack, where SNU notched 17 kills to only 12 for SWOSU, and when the set ended, SNU had claimed a 25-23 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

SNU took advantage of several SWOSU attack errors to take control early in set two, and as the set wore on, not only were Turang and Company controlling the game on the offensive side at the net, but the Crimson Storm's blocking game began to step forward and make plays. Led by Bailey Grimes, Sunny Batschelett and Kayla Thomas, the Crimson Storm had three blocks in the set, and they held SWOSU to an attack percentage of .045. SNU cashed in 13 kills on only 40 swings in the frame, and with a wire-to-wire lead, SNU claimed the second set 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Bulldogs did not go quietly in the third frame. SWOSU opened an early 5-2 lead, but SNU bounced back with a 6-0 run to claim the lead at 8-5, which forced a SWOSU timeout to quell the building momentum. The ploy worked in the short term, as SWOSU reclaimed the lead at 11-10, but SNU answered with a 7-0 run highlighted by kills from Grimes and Thomas, along with a service ace from Logan Matthews. From there, the Crimson Storm cruised home to take the win in the set 25-18 to complete the 3-0 sweep.

Turang was outstanding for SNU, but she was not the only individual who shined brightly. Setter Kylie Smith posted a double-double with 37 assists and 13 digs, and Meagan Ellis had 10 kills and 16 digs for her own double-double. Grimes had eight kills, and she hit .500 out of the middle for the Crimson Storm as well, and Thomas added seven kills. Grimes participated in four blocks, and Thomas took part in a pair.

SNU will be back in action this weekend at home, hosting one court of the annual SNU/Oklahoma Baptist Tournament. The Crimson Storm will open play on Friday morning at 9 a.m. against Drury University (Mo.) (3-6) before taking on Randall University (Okla.) (7-5) at 4 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, SNU will battle William Jewell College (Mo.) (2-5) at 9 a.m. before wrapping up the tournament against Southwest Baptist University (Mo.) (1-7) at 4 p.m.
