ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Southern Nazarene University football team hit the road for the first time in 2019 on Saturday evening, heading to do battle with the Reddies of Henderson State University. The Crimson Storm drew first blood in the game, but the offense had a hard time sustaining drives and HSU came from behind to win the game.
SNU (0-2, 0-2 GAC) rushed for 211 yards in the game, but they were only 2-for-12 on third downs, and Henderson State (2-0, 2-0 GAC) took the win 34-6.
The Crimson Storm got on the board early in the contest, cashing in their second drive of the night when
Nate Walker scampered for a 65-yard score to put SNU up 6-0. The Crimson Storm, however, missed the conversion, and HSU responded with a touchdown drive of their own to tie the score at 6-6. The Reddies also missed their conversion attempt, so the score remained tied.
Henderson State scored on their next three drives in succession, quickly building a 27-6 lead, which they took into the half. SNU ended nine of their final 10 drives in the game with a punt, and Henderson State added a late touchdown in the second half to cap off the 34-6 win.
Gage Porter led the Crimson Storm, posting 135 yards from scrimmage - 49 through the air, and 86 on the ground. Walker also ran for 84 yards on seven carries.
Jakel Davis had a good evening defensively, recording 13 tackles and forcing a fumble, and Josh Johnson had an interception and a tackle for loss.
Cameron Wells also had an interception in the game.
For HSU, Richard Stammetti threw for 396 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, as HSU racked up 516 yards of total offense. Chase Lodree (113) and L'liott Curry (103) each also had 100 yards receiving in the game.
SNU will be back in action on Saturday, September 21 when they head to Ada, Oklahoma to take on the East Central University Tigers (0-2, 0-2 GAC). The game will kick off at 6 p.m.
