DURANT, Okla. - The Southern Nazarene University volleyball team was back in action on Friday afternoon, taking the floor twice as a part of a tournament for the second weekend in a row, this time much closer to home. The Crimson Storm headed to Durant, Oklahoma to take part in the annual Southeastern Volleyball Classic, and SNU was able to start the tournament this weekend in much the same way they did a week ago.
SNU (4-2) opened the tournament with a 3-set sweep of the University of Texas-Tyler Patriots (3-3) before falling to the Bronchos of the University of Central Oklahoma (5-2) in four sets.
SNU's offense came out on fire in the first two sets against UT-Tyler. The Crimson storm racked up 28 kills in the first two frames, and SNU hit a combined .373 in the two sets as they raced out to a 2-0 lead. SNU took the first set 25-18 and they followed that up with a 25-19 win in set two. UTT kept things closer in the third set, but SNU closed out the sweep with a 25-22 win.
The box score was heavily skewed in the favor of the Crimson Storm. SNU played well at the net throughout the match, racking up 42 kills - an average of 14 kills per set - and 53 points. SNU also had seven blocks in the match, with
Bailey Grimes factoring in five of those seven stuffs. Bailey Turang was the only player for SNU to reach double figures in kills, as she racked up a match-high 11, but
Sunny Batschelett (9) and
Kayla Thomas (7) factored heavily in SNU's offense as well.
Kylie Smith handed out 33 assists in the match, and
Logan Matthews picked up 16 digs.
The Crimson Storm rode the momentum from the win - and with it a three match winning streak - into the night cap against UCO. The match was hard fought, but SNU had trouble getting the offense going. SNU hit above .200 in only the second set - which SNU won 33-31 despite UCO hitting .419 in that frame. Unfortunately for SNU, after the lengthy battle in set two, the momentum shifted back to UCO who won the final two sets by identical 25-15 scores to take the 3-1 win.
Turang and Smith each had double-doubles in the match. Turang had 18 kills and 15 digs, while Smith posted 44 assists and 14 digs.
Meagan Ellis (12) and
Madeline Lynch (10) also posted double figures in digs.
The Crimson Storm will wrap up their tournament, and an eight match road trip to start the season, on Saturday with two more matches. SNU will battle Union University (Tenn.) (3-2) at 9 a.m. before taking on Colorado State University-Pueblo (1-5) at 3 p.m.
