WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Sophomore
Caitlyn Curlee set a new SNU record in home runs and RBIs in one game as she blasted three bombs to go with eight RBIs as she led the Southern Nazarene softball team on Saturday afternoon, earning a split with a 19-5 (5) win in game one followed by a 7-2 loss in game two.
Curlee would add another home run in the second game to up her total to four on the day and six on the weekend.
SNU got off to a terrific start in game one as
Hailie Fellers and Curlee each hit two-run home runs to take a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Fellers and
Riley Kalman followed that with back-to-back RBI singles to push the lead to 6-0. Curlee stepped to the plate and sent her second homer of the game over the wall to push the lead to 9-0.
SWOSU would score four straight in the second and third innings and looked to be building a little momentum, cutting the deficit to 9-4. However, Curlee got the home run hat trick as she stepped up again and bombed another one over the left field wall, scoring three and getting the lead back out to 12-4.
It started a chain for SNU as they hung 10 runs in the fourth inning. Riley Schlarb drove two in on a RBI single while Fellers came to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared them with a three RBI double.
SNU didn't let SWOSU build any sort of momentum from there as they closed it out in five innings for the 19-5 win.
Mahina Sauer (W, 5-4) got the win with a complete game, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out two.
Curlee was 3-for-3 with three home runs, a walk, three runs scored, and eight RBIs while Fellers was terrific as well, going 4-for-5 with a double, a homer, three runs scored, and six RBIs. Schlarb was 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Kalman was 2-for-2 with two walks, a double, three runs scored, and a RBI. Sauer had a double and two runs scored while
Peyton Robinson added a double and a run scored.
After two innings of scoreless softball in game two, SWOSU put a four spot on the board in the third to take a 4-0 lead. SNU would get one back in the fourth on a solo shot from
Skye Ah Yat to cut it down to 4-1. However, the Bulldogs got three more in the fourth to extend their lead to 7-1.
Curlee would strike again in the fifth inning with a solo shot of her own to make it a 7-2 game, but SNU could not tack on anymore runs.
SNU tried to rally in the seventh, getting a RBI single from
Brooke Stutz; however, the rally was cut short as SWOSU closed the game out to force the series split.
Caitlin Lewis got the start and was saddled with the loss while
Cheyenne Laguna,
Madison Arnold, and Sauer all saw action out of the bullpen.
Curlee was 2-for-4 with a home run and a RBI while Ah Yat was 1-for-3 with a homer and a RBI. Stutz was 1-for-1 off the bench with a RBI while
Jacey James and Robinson were each 1-for-2.
SNU moves to 24-26 overall and 19-20 in the GAC. SNU will look to lock up a spot in the GAC Tournament in their series finale next weekend on the road against Northwestern Oklahoma State. The first game of the series will begin Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
