Sweeping the Evangels

SNU survives MACU 12-10 to complete season sweep

BETHANY — Southern Nazarene snapped a four-game losing streak with a come-from-behind victory over Mid-America Christian 12-10 at Feland Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Crimson Storm trailed heading into the bottom of the sixth and scored six runs in the final three innings to complete the season sweep of the Evangels. MACU ripped off 15 hits in the game, but SNU was just as lethal at the plate as they recorded 11 base-knocks.

Elijah Brady earned his first win of the season on the mound for the Storm as he tossed 2.1 innings and struck out two. Senior Zach Birkle got the start on the bump for SNU and he finished the game with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings of action. Triston Graves, Ryan Mills, and David Lechuga each came in to pitch as well and Cole Lee earned his first save of the year, coming in to pitch in the final inning and closing the door.

Junior Jack Campbell led the way at the plate for Southern Nazarene, as he was a force to be reckoned with at the plate against MACU. He went a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish with one home run, a double, two RBI's, and one run scored. Emilio Escobedo was also deadly at the plate for SNU as the sophomore launched his fourth home run of the season. He finished 1-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored as well.

Shelby Reese recorded a team-high three RBI's in the contest as he went 1-for-4, while Cobi Ceron finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Garrett Perez also finished the game with multiple hits as the senior went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Tanner Ladon recorded a hit and an RBI for SNU as well.

The south wind was blowing hard in Bethany on Tuesday and both teams knew it could be a high scoring game. The Evangels got their first taste of that in the top of the first when they scored two runs to take the early 2-0 lead. Southern Nazarene came right back in the bottom of the second with a double from Campbell that scored Jefferson Harris to make it 2-1. Later in the inning, Ladon's sacrifice fly scored Escobedo to tie the game 2-2.

Mid-America Christian scored another run in the top of the third to re-take the lead at 3-2, before later scoring three more runs in the top of the fifth to extend the advantage to 6-2. The Crimson Storm responded in the bottom of the fifth with an offensive barrage. Ceron scored on a balk to make it 6-3, before Reese's groundout scored Perez to cut the deficit to 6-4. Next batter up, Escobedo's two-run bomb over the left field wall tied the game 6-6 heading into the sixth inning.

The Evangels' hot bats carried over into the top of the sixth as they pushed three more runs across the plate to take a 9-6 lead. But SNU's bats again responded in the bottom of the sixth as Ceron scored on an error to make it 9-7, before Reese's sacrifice fly scored Perez to cut it to 9-8. Later in the inning, Lee and Harris each scored on separate wild pitches to give SNU the 10-9 lead.

The Crimson Storm added another run in the bottom of the seventh when Reese singled to left field to score Ladon to extend SNU's lead to 11-9, before MACU made things interesting with a run scored in the top of the eighth to make it 11-10. Campbell's solo home run in the bottom of the eighth gave the Storm a 12-10 lead heading into the final inning, and Lee came in and closed the door on the Evangels to earn the save.

Southern Nazarene will have just a few days of rest as they are back in action this weekend against Southwestern Oklahoma State. They welcome the Bulldogs to Feland Field for a three-game series.
