Storm Split Wild One

SNU Splits Doubleheader With Rival Oklahoma Baptist

BETHANY - In a pair of wild contests, the Southern Nazarene softball team used a four run sixth to earn a 4-2 win over Oklahoma Baptist in game one before a five run seventh inning from the Bison gave them a 10-5 win over the Storm in game two.

In game one, it was a pitching duel between Brooklyn Sparkman and the duo of Chadler Roberts and Katie Long.

Sparkman, despite some walks, managed and got out of situations. With the exception of a two-run home run from Cheyenne Demaree, Sparkman held the Bison offense in check.

On the other end, SNU could not muster a hit, or even a base runner, throughout the first five innings.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Skye Ah Yat got the rally started with a solo shot to left center to cut the Crimson Storm's deficit to 2-1.

Kaley Knox and Peyton Robinson followed with a back-to-back hits while an error in the outfield from OBU scored both runners to give SNU a 3-2 win. Brooklyn Sullivan followed with a single to center to push the lead to 4-2.

Sparkman closed the door on the Bison in the seventh, pitching a complete game and allowing two runs on five hits to go with three strikeouts.

Ah Yat was 1-for-2 with a homer, a RBi, and a run scored while Sullivan was 1-for-1 with a RBI. Knox and Robinson were each 1-for-3 with a run scored while Hailie Fellers also scored a run.

In game two, SNU got off to a rough start as four walks, an error, and a hit resulted in four Bison runs to take a 4-0 lead. Sparkman re-entered the game in relief in the first and slowed down the OBU offense.

SNU got the first run of the game on the board in the second thanks to a Kai Sanchez safety squeeze to make it a 4-1 game.

In the fourth inning, after an Ah Yat lead off double, Caitlyn Curlee switched spots with a double to left center to make it 4-2. One batter later, Sanchez flied one to center to scored a run and cut it to 4-3.

OBU got one back in the sixth, but SNU got two in the bottom of the sixth as Jacey James singled to right to score one.

With two down and James on second, Brooke Stutz stepped up and came through with a huge RBI to center to even the game at five a piece as they moved into the seventh inning.

However, OBU scored five runs in the seventh inning, taking advantage of an error and getting a grand slam from Demaree to take a 10-5 lead.

Unfortunately for Sparkman (L, 11-5), despite a great relief effort, she was saddled with the loss. She pitched 6.1 innings, allowing six runs, only one earned, on seven hits to go with three strikeouts. Caitlin Lewis got the start while Cheyenne Laguna also saw work.

Curlee was 4-for-4 with two doubles, a RBI, and two runs scored while Ah Yat was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Sanchez was 0-for-1 with three sacrifice hits, a stolen base, and two RBI while Stutz was 1-for-1 with a RBI.

SNU returns to action on Friday as they open a four-game series against Arkansas-Monticello. The double header starts at 2 p.m.
