RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - After a tough Friday evening at Chartwells Women's Sports Complex, the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm had a big response, defeating the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns 10-5 and 3-2.
In the first game, SNU got a 1-0 lead in the top of the second off a throwing error by the Golden Suns, but Tech got it back in the bottom half with a sac fly.
Curlee struck again in the fourth inning as she laced a single to right to push the lead to 2-1, but Tech responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to move back ahead 3-2.
In the fifth,
Kai Sanchez scored on a wild pitch to even the game at three a piece while
Mahina Sauer put a ball in play to push home another run and put SNU back on top 4-3. Again, Tech had a response, getting one more run across in the bottom half of the fifth to make it 4-4.
SNU blew the game wide open in the sixth inning as Curlee continued her big afternoon with a two-run blast to center to put SNU ahead 6-4.
Hailie Fellers made it 7-4 with a RBI double while
Peyton Robinson singled a run home on a squeeze.
Sauer added some more insurance as she singled home two to make it a 10-4 game. SNU held off any Tech rally in the seventh to secure the win.
Sauer (W, 2-2) got the start and win in the circle, going seven complete while also going 1-for-4 at hte plate with three RBI. Curlee was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored while Sanchez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
In the second contest, Sauer got thing rolling for SNU with a RBI single for a 1-0 lead, but Tech got it back on a RBI double in the second.
Sauer came up and came through again in the third with her second RBI single to center to make it 2-1 and Tech answered again with a RBI in the fourth to make it 2-2.
Jacey James put SNU ahead for good with a RBI single in the fifth to lead 3-2 and
Brooklyn Sparkman closed the door on the Suns, giving SNU a huge series split for the weekend.
Sparkman (W, 10-2) pitched a complete game, striking out three.
Kaley Knox had a career-day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases while Sauer was 2-for-3 with two RBI. James added the go-ahead RBI while
Peyton Robinson was 1-for-1 with two steals.
SNU moves to 15-12 on the year and 10-6 in the GAC. They will return to action on Friday, March 22 as they welcome in Harding for a four-game series beginning at 2 p.m.
