Getting Defensive

SNU Uses Excellent Defense in Bounce Back Win Over Southeastern

BETHANY — It didn't take Southern Nazarene long to forget about the gut-wrenching 56-55 loss on Thursday night, as they bounced back on Saturday with a 54-46 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State inside the Sawyer Center.

SNU's strong defensive effort once again carried the Crimson Storm (12-10, 11-5 GAC) to another victory on their home floor. This time, they held the Savage Storm (11-9, 9-7) to 26.1 percent shooting from the floor and forced 20 turnovers out of Southeastern. The Crimson Storm struggled from behind the three-point arc, making just 3-of-21 (14%) attempts, but still shot 38.8 percent from the floor.

SNU out-rebounded SOSU 38-27 in the game and never trailed in the contest. Alexus Jones led the way on the offensive side of the ball for the Crimson Storm as she scored 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, and pulled down six rebounds. Irene Perez tallied 10 points and six rebounds while Jaycee Soap scored 10 points off the SNU bench. Madeline Schroepfer stuffed the stat sheet once again for Southern Nazarene as she scored nine points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and recorded five steals as well.

Southern Nazarene jumped off to a very quick start inside Sawyer as they shot 64 percent in the opening period to take a 24-9 lead into the second. SNU held Southeastern to 15 percent shooting in the opening quarter.

SNU's defense carried over into the second as they once again held the Savage Storm to nine points, but the Crimson Storm's offense struggled to get going as they shot just 20 percent. They did force five turnovers in the period to take a 36-18 lead into halftime.

Southeastern came out firing in the third quarter as they shot 71 percent from the floor and went 4-for-4 from downtown. They held the Crimson Storm to 18 percent shooting the quarter and cut the SNU lead to 42-41 heading into the final frame.

The Crimson Storm turned up the defense in the fourth quarter, as they held Southeastern to just one made field goal. The Savage Storm shot 7 percent in the fourth quarter and after SNU went on an early run, that made it difficult for them to come back. The Crimson Storm used their defense and knocked down free throws to seal the victory and move to 7-2 inside the Sawyer Center this season.

Southern Nazarene will be back in action next Thursday inside the Sawyer Center as they host rival Oklahoma Baptist at 5:30 p.m.
