BETHANY - Sometimes a team just has your number.
After falling to Southeastern by a stunning score earlier this year in Durant, 10th-ranked Southern Nazarene and the Savage Storm played more a match-up these that was expected on Saturday afternoon in the Sawyer Center.
However, Southeastern rode 11 made 3-pointers and their star Kevin Buckingham to an 81-77 win, ending SNU's incredible 25-game home winning streak, formerly the second longest streak in Division II.
The Savage Storm was 24 of 47 (51%) from the field and 11 of 21 (52%) from deep. Southeastern also got it done at the charity stripe, going 22 of 25 (88%) at the line.
On the other side, SNU was 29 of 68 (43%) from the field and 7 of 23 (30%) from deep. The Crimson Storm got to the line 16 times and shot 75% from the line.
SNU only turned the ball over seven times and forced the Savage Storm into 15. Southeastern won the rebounding battle 31-30 and had one extra assist at 13-12.
It was an electric start for SNU as
Micah Speight got a steal on the opening possession and lobbed one up for
Quaylon Newton who threw down a thunderous dunk. Speight got another steal on the next possession, leading to a jumper from
Jhonathan Dunn.
The lead went out to 7-0 as Speight buried another three to ignite the crowd. After a few possessions, a
Coleman Edwards three pushed the lead out to 17-7 in the first seven minutes.
SNU was active defensively, forcing eight Southeastern turnovers in the first eight minutes. SNU got their lead to a game-high 13 points on a Speight 3-pointer with 7:40 to play in the first half.
Leading 32-21 with 5:13 to play, Southeastern connected on four 3-pointers to go on a massive 16-0 run that completely flipped the momentum and gave the Savage Storm a 37-32 lead.
Ashton Charles got a jumper to fall, but SNU went into the half trailing 37-34.
Southeastern maintained their lead early in the second half, pushing it as high as seven points early on, but SNU went toe-to-toe on the other end as was able to get it back down to three.
Trailing 53-48, SNU went on a run fueled by Speight and Dunn. They pushed back ahead 56-55 on an Edwards 3-pointer and got the lead out to 60-55 on four points from
Noah Starkey.
Another run from Southeastern, this time a 12-2 run put them right back up by five points as another 3-pointer went down for the Savage Storm.Â
Kellen Manek got a jumped to fall with under five remaining and got it out to a seven point lead again with 4:48 to play. Southeastern got stops and got their lead to 75-67 win 2:28 to play.
A 3-pointer from Charles followed by a lay up by Speight got it back to three, but Buckingham followed with a basket of his own to go back up 77-72 with 1:17 to play.
Leading by six with 28 seconds to play, Speight got a lay up to fall followed by a turnover that resulted in a
Zach Johnson lay in to cut it to 79-77.
However, Jett Jobe got a pair of free throws to fall and Southeastern escaped the Sawyer Center with the four point win.
Speight finished with 22 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals while Starkey went for 17 points and four rebounds. Dunn went for 15 points and two steals while Newton had seven points, five rebounds, and three steals. Johnson added five points and three steals.
Buckingham led the Savage Storm with 28 points while Jobe added 13 points and five assists.
SNU goes to 20-4 on the year and 13-3 in the GAC, still maintaining sole possession of first place in the standings. They return to action on Thursday as they welcome in rivals Oklahoma Baptist at 7:30 p.m. SNU won a thriller over their rivals on Bison Hill on January 17, 58-57.
