SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Southern Nazarene bounced back from their loss against No. 1 Lubbock Christian with a 64-58 win against St. Mary's University on Saturday at Bill Greehey Arena.
In only the second meeting against the Rattlers in program history, the Crimson Storm fought off a tough second quarter push to beat STMU. The Storm were beat in their first meeting by St. Mary's 56-47 last season in Lubbock, Texas.
The Crimson Storm were consistent, as they have been all season, in outscoring their opponent in the first quarter. SNU was able to go up 15-7 in the first quarter, but STMU was able to counter back with a powerful 19 point second quarter.
SNU was again on a defensive kick as they were able to force 21 turnovers and held STMU to 22-of-50 (44%) shooting on the day. The Crimson Storm struggled on the night as they shot 41.2% in the contest but managed push their way to a win.
Alexus Jones and
Abby Niehues led the Storm statistically as they combined for 30 points. Jones topped her season-high 10 rebounds with 11 rebounds in the game to compliment her 15 points. Jones was also able to strip away three balls from the Rattlers. Niehues went a perfect 6-6 on the night as she scored a season-high 15 points and registered one block.
Sonia Sarda followed close behind with 11 points, eight assists, and one steal.
Jaycee Soap collected seven points, three assists, and four rebounds.
Kennedy Gillette got her a piece of the cake too with six points and five rebounds.
Myriam Garcia shot 3-of-4 from the floor and finished with six points from the bench.
The Crimson Storm were able to outscore the Rattlers in each of the final two quarters after both teams struggled in the fourth getting shots up. SNU's largest lead of the contest was 10 points.
Southern Nazarene continues on the road next Saturday as they face off against the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
