BETHANY – Records are made to be broken, and Southern Nazarene's
Jhonathan Dunn broke one of the biggest records in program history in an 81-56 thumping of Northwestern Oklahoma State inside the Sawyer Center on Thursday night.
Dunn entered the game tied with ECU's Braxton Reeves for most career points scored in the Great American Conference, and the senior guard broke the record on the first play of the game with a thunderous slam dunk. At the conclusion of Thursday night's game, he sits alone at the top with 1,753 career points.
After breaking that record, Dunn did exactly what he's done all season long for the Crimson Storm (5-2, 1-0 GAC) and that was dominate from start to finish. He racked up a game-high 31 points on 10-of-20 shooting, including a 4-for-9 clip from behind the three-point line. He also added three rebounds and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
SNU's point guard
Micah Speight broke out of a mini-scoring slump as he poured in 26 points on just 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. He knocked down 4-of-7 tries from downtown and went 10-for-11 from the charity stripe. He also added five rebounds, four steals, and three assists in the contest.
Morris Wilson II finished with nine points, four rebounds, and three assists while
Manny Dixon chipped in five points and a team-high six rebounds in the game as well.
Josiah Johnson added four points and three rebounds while
Maik Bouwer,
Karlyn Kenner, and
Camden Patterson all got on the board for SNU as well.
Southern Nazarene's offense struggled out of the gate as they shot just 36.7 percent from the floor. The Rangers (1-3, 0-1 GAC) shot just 32.1 percent but they were forcing the Storm into some difficult looks. After a 6:19 stretch where SNU didn't score a bucket, the Southern Nazarene defense flexed its muscles as they held Northwestern scoreless for a 9:26 stretch in the first half. The Storm allowed just 21 first-half points, the fewest they've given up in any half this season as they took a 16-point lead into halftime.
The Crimson Storm's offense came to life in the second half as they shot 45.8 percent from the floor and forced the Rangers into a bunch of early fouls. SNU shot 21 free-throws in the second half and were very efficient, knocking down 19 of them. The Storm ballooned their lead to 57-35 with 11:31 to play, and then later pushed it to 70-43 with just under 7:00 to play.
SNU was able to cruise from there as the Storm picked up their first GAC victory of the 2019-20 season. Southern Nazarene will be back in action on Saturday afternoon on the road in Ada as they battle East Central at 3:00 p.m.
