Bulldogs Wear Down Storm

SNU falls to SWOSU 28-7 in Weatherford

WEATHERFORD, Okla. -

It was Senior Day on Saturday in Weatherford and it ended up a happy one for the home team, as Southwestern Oklahoma State took down Southern Nazarene, 28-7.

It was the third straight loss for the Crimson Storm (2-7, 2-7), while SWOSU snapped a six-game losing streak.

SNU struggled to get things going on offense, while the defense was worn down by a Bulldogs offense that ran 71 plays for 403 yards. It was the first time in 22 games SWOSU rushed for more than 200 yards as they racked up 207 yards for the game.

SNU had 245 yards of offense and had a respectable 5.4 yards per play average, but only ran 45 plays.

Jakel Davis was a bright spot for the Storm as he had four kickoff returns for 132 yards, giving SNU great field position on several occasions. SNU eventually capitalized with 8:22 to play in the game, scoring their first points on a 1-yard Gage Porter touchdown run. Porter finished with 48 yards rushing and was 10-for-17 for 138 yards through the air.

Vance Hooper had a great game in his first action after missing the last two games with an injury. Hooper had five catches for 99 yards and also had three carries for eight yards. Kolbe Branch had his strongest game of the season as well, grabbing three passes for 48 yards.

The Bulldogs came into the game No. 11 in the conference in time of possession (25:48 per game) and No. 12 in the conference in rushing offense (102.9 yards per game), but controlled the entire game beginning with the very first possession.

Southwestern went 75 yards in 11 plays on their opening possession, all runs, and scored on a 3-yard touchdown run from Donnell Hawkins. Hawkins finished with 17 carries for 103 yards.

SNU started their second possession strong, driving down to the Bulldogs' 38-yard line. However, a sack and an incomplete pass on fourth down gave SWOSU great field position at their own 41-yard line.

Southwestern took 18 plays to march 59 yards for another score to go up 14-0 with 5:56 to play in the half.

Penalties were the killer for SNU all afternoon, as the Storm finished with seven penalties for 60 yards, nearly all of which derailed promising drives.

After a 59-yard pass to Hooper set up SNU with a first down at the SWOSU 12-yard line midway through the third quarter, an illegal block moved SNU back 15 yards. Three plays later, SNU was forced to punt after a SWOSU sack on third down.

While Ryan Reid's punt was beautifully covered and downed at the 1-yard line, the Bulldogs effectively put the game away with a 12-play, 99-yard drive that put SWOSU up 21-0 with 12:25 to play in the fourth quarter.

SWOSU's four touchdown drives took 5:36, 8:50, 6:38 and 6:34 of game action.

SNU is back in action at 3 p.m., Nov. 9 at SNU Football Stadium when they take on Northwestern Oklahoma State for the Crimson Storm's annual homecoming game.
