Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | SNU Athletics

Second Half Surge Leads Men's Soccer to Win at OBU

SHAWNEE, Okla. - For much of the early season, the Southern Nazarene University men's soccer team has played better than their results might have indicated. SNU has been competitive in most of their matches, playing to a one-goal decision on five occasions, but they had found only one victory through their first eight tilts.

The Crimson Storm changed that in a big way under the lights on Friday.

SNU (2-7, 1-4 GAC) opened the scoring in the second minute, and the Storm never looked back, putting up a season-high five goals in their 5-1 win over Oklahoma Baptist University (3-6, 1-4 GAC).

Angel Lopez got the SNU offense rolling almost immediately. He fired a shot into the low left corner of the goal with only 82 seconds elapsed in the match, beating OBU goalkeeper Parker Lawter to give SNU a 1-0 lead. Despite the early marker from Lopez, the Storm needed a well-played half from Bence Mocsari in goal. The freshman netminder made five saves in the opening 45 minutes, as OBU out-shot SNU 9-6 in the frame, but thanks to Mocsari, the Storm held the 1-0 lead at intermission.

Jovanny Hernandez doubled the SNU lead just over six minutes into the second half. He cashed in a pass from Jhon Mareus with another shot that went in on the low left, and in the 52nd minute, SNU held the lead 2-0. Less than seven minutes later, Lopez found Guy Esquivel for the first of his two goals on the night, Esquivel added another in the 64th minute on a feed from Caleb Gray, to push SNU's lead to 3-0. SNU held a four goal lead for most of the rest of the game. Gerald Ngwa added a fifth SNU goal in the 83rd minute to briefly push SNU's lead to 5-0 before OBU got on the board with a long shot from Riolan Mello in the 85th minute.

Mocsari and Lawter each played the full 90 minutes for their clubs in goal, and Mocsari finished the night with seven saves for SNU. Esquivel had a pair of goals for the Storm, and Lopez and Hernandez each had three points in the match with a goal and an assist.

SNU will be back in action on Thursday, October 10, when they head north to take on the Newman University Jets (3-3, 2-2 GAC). The match is slated to kick off at 7 p.m.
