LAWTON, Okla. – There are only a few players across the country that can get into a zone that others just have no answer for, and one could argue that
Bailee Turang is one of those players for Southern Nazarene.
Turang was playing a completely different game than anyone else on Tuesday night as she was simply unstoppable. She racked up a career-high 30 kills on a .339 hitting percentage to go along with 22 kills and four service aces as SNU took down Cameron in five sets. It was only the second time ever in school history that a player reached the 30-kill mark in a single match as Turang was one kill shy of tying the school record of 31 set by Michelle Pape back in 2006.
The Aggies (6-17) had the idea of an upset on their home floor at the forefront of their minds as the match was pushed to five sets, but the Crimson Storm (18-8) were having none of it as they survived and won the wild match in Aggie Gym. On top of Turang's lethal offensive night,
Kylie Smith was the one orchestrating all of those kills for her. Smith piled on 64 assists, which is the third-most in a single match in school history. She also added 15 digs and two kills as well.
Meagan Ellis also had a sensational game as she finished with 13 kills to go along with 24 digs. Ellis has now recorded double-digit kills in three consecutive games and has provided a solid one-two punch alongside Turang for head coach
Kevin Ingram.
Kayla Thomas added 12 kills to go along with a couple of blocks while
Bailey Grimes chipped in 10 kills and added four blocks.
Grace Miracle added eight kills off the Storm bench while
Madeline Lynch recorded 10 digs and two service aces.
Southern Nazarene recorded four aces in the first set but hit just .174 in the opening frame as they had their hands full to start. Cameron hit .344 in the first set as the Aggies took an early 1-0 lead on their home floor after winning the frame 25-21. The Crimson Storm turned up their defensive effort in the second stanza as they held Cameron to a .086 hitting clip while they racked up 17 kills. The Aggies battled however and nearly took a 2-0 set lead, but SNU hung on to win the frame 26-24 to tie the match 1-1.
The Crimson Storm tallied 20 team kills in the third set and racked up a .372 hitting percentage as Cameron was overmatched. SNU took the frame 25-20 to take a 2-1 lead and looked well on their way to a four-set win. The Aggies were not going down without a fight however, as they cooled off the Storm offense for a bit. SNU hit just .189 in the fourth frame as Cameron took a 21-19 lead. A couple of kills from Miracle and Turang tied the set 21-21 before the Storm won two more points to take a 23-21 advantage. Cameron responded on a 4-0 run to take the fourth set and push the match to a fifth stanza.
The final frame was all Southern Nazarene's as they hit .412 and recorded three aces, two of them being the final two points. Cameron hit just .176 as the Storm jumped out to an 11-6 lead. Cameron tried to make it interesting but SNU got two aces from Lynch to close out the match.
Southern Nazarene's road trip continues this week as they travel to Ada on Thursday night to take on East Central on Halloween night with a 7:00 start scheduled.
