Finding Their Rhythm

SNU wins third straight, downs Arkansas Tech 68-54 on the road

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — For the first time in school history, Southern Nazarene picked up a victory in Russellville with a 68-54 win over Arkansas Tech on Thursday night in the Tucker Coliseum.

Prior to tonight, SNU was 0-7 all-time on the road against ATU, but that streak is over as the Crimson Storm (5-8, 4-3 GAC) picked up their first road win of the season. The win also is their third in a row, as SNU has not lost a game to start 2019.

In a game in which they never trailed from start to finish, Southern Nazarene held the Golden Suns (5-8, 2-5 GAC) to 35.6 percent shooting in the game, including 22 percent from three-point range. The Storm finished the game at a 39 percent clip from the floor, but knocked down 8-of-19 (42.1%) of their three-point tries. SNU won the rebounding battle 48-30 and made 14-of-20 (70%) free throws.

The Crimson Storm were led by senior guard Adrienne Berry who scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 4-of-8 from behind the arc. Berry added three rebounds and two assists in the game as well. Alexus Jones has started to find her rhythm in the SNU offense as the sophomore tallied 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, as she was the catalyst of the Storm attack. Abby Niehues provided another strong performance on both sides as she scored 12 points, snagged nine rebounds, and blocked three shots.

SNU also got some nice contributions off the bench as Jaycee Soap chipped in eight points, while Massey Beard tallied six. Sonia Sarda scored three points and recorded a steal as well for the Storm.

Starting games off red-hot seems to be the norm for Southern Nazarene lately as they shot 9-for-19 (47.3%) in the opening period. They held Tech to just 25% from the field and took a 23-8 lead into the second as Berry scored 11 of her 18 points in the first quarter.

The Crimson Storm kept their foot on the gas in the second quarter as the scored 16 points and took a 39-20 lead into the break. The Golden Suns were able to find their offense in the second half as they scored 34, but it proved to not be enough.

Southern Nazarene cooled off a bit in the third quarter, shooting just 28.6 percent, but still managed 18 points as they went to the free-throw line 12 times in the period. ATU scored 19, but the Storm still took a 57-39 lead into the final quarter.

The Golden Suns held SNU to just 11 points in the fourth, but the Storm bumped their lead back up to 20 early on and that didn't matter. SNU was able to cruise care-free down the stretch of the fourth to close out ATU.

Southern Nazarene will look to make it four wins in a row on Saturday afternoon in Searcy, as they take on Harding at 1 p.m.
