Smith sets school record with 66 assists

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene got its home season started off in style with a school-record and its first five-set match of the year in a 3-2 (25-18, 28-30, 24-26, 25-16, 15-10) win over Cameron.

Kylie Smith broke SNU's record for most assists in a single-match with 66. That snapped Heather Overtuf's 2006 mark of 65. It was the eighth time in school history that at least 60 assists were recorded in a match and the fifth player all-time to post at least 60.

The first five-set match of the year for the Storm (4-5) lived up to the billing with 16 lead changes and 39 ties throughout the night.

Smith also added nine digs and three kills to lead the way for SNU. Bailee Turang tied a career-high with 25 kills and added 16 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. Three other players had double figures kills as Kayla Thomas had 15 kills along with four digs and two blocks. Makenna Hunter had 13 kills while Meagan Ellis had 11. Ellis also had seven digs and two blocks. Logan Matthews had 20 digs while Makayla Shonamon had 10.

SNU as a team hit .225 (73-31-187) and had nine aces.

The Crimson Storm blew the doors off the first set with a 17-8 run. SNU had set-point at 24-13 before the Aggies scored five straight to cut it to 24-18. The storm though got a Cameron error to take the 1-0 set lead. SNU held a 22-18 lead in the second set, but the Aggies scored five straight to lead 23-22. The two tied six more times and SNU had set-point three different times with the final time coming at 28-27. Cameron though scored the final three points of the set to tie the match at 1-1.

There were 15 ties and nine lead changes in the third set alone. The Storm led by as much three in the third set and were up 20-17 when the Aggies went on a 4-1 run to take a 21-20 advantage. SNU answered with a 3-1 run, that was capped by a Turang kill, which gave Southern Nazarene set point at 24-22. Cameron though scored four straight though to take the set and a 2-1 lead in the match.

It was all SNU in the fourth set as the Storm hit .325 and had just three attacking errors. Turang had six of her kills in the fourth set as SNU trailed just once the entire set. The fifth set had six ties before an Ellis kill broke an 8-8 tie and started a string of three straight points for SNU and the Storm rolled from there.
