BETHANY - The Southern Nazarene volleyball team made made it two straight in game two of their three game home stand as they knocked off Dallas Baptist in four sets on Saturday afternoon in the Sawyer Center.
It was another terrific performance for the SNU attack as they finished with 65 kills to only 17 errors for a hitting percentage of .298 while DBU only had 45 kills to 18 errors for a .176 hitting percentage. The Storm had 10 service aces on the afternoon and added 75 digs and 60 assists as a team.
It was a back-and-forth first set with neither team with a lead over three points. The Storm had some sparks to build small leads and were able to maintain that lead late in the set. The Storm finished a tight set off with a 25-23 advantage and a 1-0 lead.
After being tied at seven a piece, SNU had a five point rally to move ahead 12-7 in the early goings. DBU attempted to get back into the match, but the Storm were able to maintain that 4-5 point lead throughout the set and move the set to 2-0 with a 25-20 win. SNU forced DBU into seven errors and a .073 hitting percentage in set two.
The Storm were all over the Patriots in set three, looking to make it a quick afternoon as they led 13-5 thanks to a hot start. However, this time the Patriots did have a response, scoring eight of the next 10 points to get back within two before a huge seven point rally late in the set to extend the match with a 25-21 third set victory. After hitting over .300 in the first two sets, the Storm cooled down with eight errors in set three, hitting only .140.
In the fourth set, the Storm remained composed and took complete control early on as they ran out to a 14-5 lead. This time, SNU was able to keep their foot on the gas pedal, hitting a red hot .400 in the final set including 16 kills to two errors, as they closed the match with a 25-15 win.
Junior
Bailee Turang had a huge match, going for 20 kills, while hitting .390 from the outside, as well as a team-leading 18 digs. Sophomore
Kayla Thomas added 12 kills while senior
Makenna Hunter had 10 kills and a .400 hitting percentage to go with four total blocks. Junior
Kylie Smith had 52 assists in the match.
Defensively, sophomore
Meagan Ellis also added 18 digs while Smith had 14. Freshman
Logan Matthews had 10 digs as libero. Turang and Matthews each had three service aces while Turang had two total blocks.
Emma Eakin had 11 kills while Brooke Clark had 10. Marci Perry had 21 assists while Merci Perry had 12 digs.
Southern Nazarene goes to 10-9 overall and get their first win over DBU since September 21, 2013, snapping a three game losing streak to the Patriots in the process. The Storm will complete their home stand on Tuesday evening as they remain in non-conference play with a 7 PM match-up against Newman.
