SNU wins second straight at home, records second straight shutout against Harding

BETHANY, Okla. — For the first time in school history, Southern Nazarene has started Great American Conference play with a 2-0 record as they shutout Harding 2-0 at Wes Harmon Field on Saturday evening.

Entering Saturday, the last time the Crimson Storm (3-5, 2-0 GAC) had not allowed a goal in back-to-back games was in 2011 when they shutout John Brown and St Gregory's. This is also the first time SNU has won two conference games in the month of September since the 2015 season. The win is the Storm's first against Harding at Wes Harmon Field since 2002.

Despite not attempting a single shot attempt in the second half, SNU's success in the first half carried them into the school record books Saturday. They fired six shots on goal in the opening period, three of those landing on goal. The Bisons (5-2-1, 1-1 GAC) took 13 in the game, three of those being on target.

In the 21st minute after the Storm's offensive attack forced Harding's goalkeeper outside of the box, SNU's Carson Harding made them pay for it. He fired a rocket over the outstretched hand of the Bisons goalie, giving Southern Nazarene a 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season.

Angel Lopez recorded an assist for the second straight game in the 24th minute, as he found Cristian Hernandez who lasered one in the corner of the net giving SNU a 2-0 lead. The goal was Hernandez's second goal of the season as well.

After taking the 2-0 lead into half, the Crimson Storm focused their attention on defense for the entire second half. The Bisons fired nine shots in the period, but goalkeeper Colton Hadlock made a couple of great saves to keep Harding off the board. Hadlock finished with three saves on the night.

Lopez, Hernandez, and Harding each finished with a shot on goal for Southern Nazarene in the match. SNU has never won three straight GAC games since joining Division II, and will take a 2-0 record on the road in their next conference game.

The Storm takes a break from GAC play next week with a couple of non-conference games at home before hitting the road to take on Oklahoma Baptist in their next conference match.
