Storm Sweep Day

SNU downed Urbana and Chadron State each 3-1 Saturday

ST. CHARLES, Mo. — After dropping its first two matches of the year Friday, Southern Nazarene bounced back with a pair of 3-1 wins over Urbana (25-21, 24-26, 25-22, 25-20) and Chadron State (25-23, 25-20, 20-25, 25-19) Saturday.
Bailee Turang and Meagan Ellis combined for 29 kills and 30 digs in the opening win. Each notched their first double-double of the year as Turang had 15 kills and 17 digs while Ellis had 14 kills and 13 digs. Turang added two aces and a block and Ellis also had a block. Kylie Smith also posted her first double-double of the year with 33 assists and 15 digs. She added seven kills, a block and an ace. Kayla Thomas notched nine kills and three blocks as well. Bailey Grimes recorded five blocks while Logan Matthews posted a career-high 21 digs and Makayla Shonamon had 13.
 
The Storm held Urbana to just a .048 clip while posting a season-high eight blocks. SNU also had 86 digs in the match.
 
There were 30 total ties in the four sets and 11 lead changes with 14 ties and four lead changes in the first set alone. Neither team held a lead bigger than two until SNU broke a 17-17 tie with an Ellis ace to score the first of three straight to lead 20-17. SNU took their biggest lead of the match at 24-19 after Ellis capped a 4-0 run with a kill and the Storm held on to lead 1-0.
 
Urbana used a 10-2 run early in the set and never gave up the lead, but SNU made a late charge down the stretch. The Blue Knights led by as much as seven and were up 21-14, but the Storm used a 10-3 run to knot it at 24. Urbana held on though to tie the match at 1-1.
 
SNU never led by more than six at any point in the third set, but never trailed to lead 2-1. The Blue Knights held the Storm close in the third, but SNU used a 5-1 run, capped by a Makenna Hunter kill, to seal the match.
 
Against Chadron, Smith dished out a season-high 47 assists and notched her second straight double-double with 10 digs. She also had two blocks, five kills and a pair of aces. Turang also recorded her second consecutive double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs. The junior also served a career-high six aces. The ties for the 10th-most in a single-match in school history. SNU had a season-high 14 aces.
 
Ellis also had 10 kills and seven digs. Logan Matthew bested her previous season-high earlier in the day with 26 digs. Grimes also had three blocks as the Storm had three as a team.
 
SNU hit .262 (58-21-141) as a team and held Chadron State to just a .168 clip.
 
In the opening set, SNU broke a 16-16 tie and never lost the lead again as hit held off the Eagles' late charge to take a 1-0 lead. The two were tied at 16 again in the second set, but the Storm used a 6-2 run, capped by a Turang kill, to take a 22-18 lead. SNU closed the set on a 3-1 spurt as a Turang ace gave SNU a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Chadron State jumped out to a 16-7 lead in the third set and kept SNU at bay from there to force a fourth set.  In the final set, SNU used an 11-4 run to lead 17-10 and didn't look back from there.
