ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Southern Nazarene closed out the 2018 regular season Saturday with a 1-0 win, and a 3-2 loss to Henderson State.
Â
Katelyn Brown got the start in the opener, as the senior earned her 16
th win of the season. She threw her fourth complete shutout of the season and struck out nine batters and gave up six hits in 7.0 innings. It was a pitcher's duel in the opening game, as there were just 12 combined hits from both sides.
Â
Kendal Stockstill led the way at the plate for SNU as she went 2-for-3.
Mahina Sauer,
Caitlyn Curlee,
Kai Sanchez, and
Victoria Rodriguez each finished 1-for-3, and
Cheyenne Reynolds scored the winning run for the Storm.
Â
After six scoreless innings from both sides, the Crimson Storm (24-26-1, 20-18-1 GAC) got on the board in the top of the seventh when
Brooke Stutz reached on a fielder's choice to score Reynolds to give SNU the 1-0 lead. The Reddies (32-23, 24-20 GAC) needed at least one run in the bottom of the seventh to extend the game, and they almost got it. After putting a runner on third with two outs, Brown shut the door on HSU to seal the victory for SNU.
Â
Brooke Tate got the start in the final game of the series, as the senior took her fourth loss of the season. She gave up three runs, one earned, and allowed seven hits in 6.0 innings of action. The Crimson Storm and Reddies each totaled seven hits in the game.
Â
Mahina Sauer got SNU on the board first with her single in the third inning that scored
Kriston Shumaker to make it 1-0. Henderson State though, came right back in the bottom of the third to score three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Shumaker's ground out in the fourth inning scored
Victoria Rodriguez to cut the deficit to 3-2, but that was the closest the Storm came as HSU held them scoreless in the final three innings.
Â
Sauer finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Shumaker and
Cheyenne Reynolds each went 1-for-4 in the game.
Caitlyn Curlee and
Katelyn Brown each finished 1-for-4 at the plate as well.
Â
The Crimson Storm now turn their attention to Bentonville next week, where they'll compete in the GAC Championship tournament taking place May 2-5.
