Storm Finish Season at OBU

SNU closes out the series with 7-3, 7-5 losses in Shawnee

SHAWNEE, Okla. — In the final two games of the season, Southern Nazarene dropped both games of a doubleheader with Oklahoma Baptist 7-3 and 7-5 on Saturday.

The Crimson Storm (11-30, 7-25 GAC) had a 2-1 lead heading into the sixth inning, until the Bison (27-15, 19-10 GAC) scored runs in the final three and a half innings to clinch the win. David Gustafson got the start on the mound for SNU as he struck out four, gave up four hits, and allowed two runs, both earned, in 6.0 innings of action. Cody Tolbert and Austin Cooper each provided an inning of relief as well.

Emilio Escobedo got things going for the Storm in the opening inning, as the freshman singled through the left side to score Shelby Reese. OBU responded in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1.

Later in the fifth inning, Cole Wagner's single to left field scored Reese to give SNU the lead back at 2-1, before the Bison tied it again in the sixth inning. Oklahoma Baptist took their first lead in the seventh, when they scored three to take a 5-2 lead. In the top of the eighth, Tanner Maskey reached on a fielder's choice that ended up scoring Escobedo to make it 5-3, but that was the closest the Storm came.

The Bison tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to push the lead to 7-3, and the Storm couldn't answer in the top of the ninth.

Reese finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored to lead the way for SNU. Wagner went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Escobedo finished 1-for-4 with a run scored. Cole Lee went 1-for-3, while Joe Toilolo finished 1-for-4 at the plate as well.

Jefferson Harris got the nod in the final game of the series, as he took his sixth loss of the season. He struck out five batters, allowed seven runs, six of those earned, and walked two batters in 5.2 innings of work.

Similar to the opener, Southern Nazarene was on the board in the first inning as Austin Cooper scored Shelby Reese on a sacrifice fly to give them an early 1-0 lead. Oklahoma Baptist added two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead, and added one more in the third to push it to 3-1. OBU pushed two more runs across the plate in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead, before Cole Wagner drove in Christian Dent in the fifth to cut it to 5-2.

Later in the same inning, Joe Toilolo singled up the middle to score Wagner and Reese to make it 5-4, before Tanner Maskey scored on a passed ball in the sixth to tie the game 5-5. OBU scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to re-take the lead 7-5, and held off the Storm in the seventh.

Reese led the way at the plate for SNU in the finale, as he finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Toilolo finished with two RBI's, as he went 1-for-3, while Maskey went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Wagner finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, and Dent went 1-for-3 with a run scored as well.
