Storm Fall to No. 7 Southern Arkansas

SNU drops first two games of the series with Muleriders

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene dropped both games Friday against No. 7 ranked Southern Arkansas at Cypert Athletic Complex 15-6, and 5-4.

The Muleriders came into the game ranked number one in the Great American Conference, while also boasting a seven-game winning streak. Katelyn Brown got the start in the circle for the Crimson Storm in the opening game, as she took her sixth loss of the season. She gave up eight runs, seven of those earned, in 4.2 innings of action while striking out eight SAU batters.

Only five players for SNU tallied hits in the game, as Riley Brown led the way at the plate. The senior went 3-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Mahina Sauer and Caitlyn Curlee each went 2-for-4, as Curlee had two RBI's and one run scored. Katelyn Brown went 1-for-3 with an RBI at the plate as well.

Southern Nazarene wasted no time in taking the early lead, as Curlee singled in the bottom of the first to score Sydni Toilolo. Katelyn Brown drove in Riley Brown later in the inning to give SNU a quick 2-0 lead.

The Storm lead didn't last long however, as the Mulerider bats came alive in the top of the second. They scored five runs to take a 5-2 lead. The Storm responded in the top of the third with a couple of bombs from Riley Brown and Caitlyn Curlee. Brown's two-run homer was her first of the year, and cut the SAU lead to 5-4. Curlee hit her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to center field to tie the game up at 5.

SNU retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Jacey James grounded out to second base, which scored Kaley Knox to make it 6-5. The Muleriders went on to score 10 unanswered runs in the last three innings to put the game out of reach.

In game two of the doubleheader, Brooke Tate took her second loss of the season as the senior threw a complete game. She gave up five runs, all earned, and struck out two batters.

Jacey James led the way for the Crimson Storm at the plate as she went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Mahina Sauer went 1-for-4 and tallied two RBI's as well for SNU. Riley Brown, Caitlyn Curlee, and Katelyn Brown all went 1-for-4 at the plate, while Victoria Rodriguez went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

For the second game in a row, Southern Nazarene struck first in the opening inning as Sauer reached on an error that ended up scoring James to make it 1-0. The Mulriders knocked in a couple of runs in the top of the second to take their first lead of the game at 2-1. The Storm tied it in the bottom of the second when James singled to left field, scoring Rodriguez.

Southern Arkansas homered twice in the top of the fourth, and both were solo shots that gave them a 4-2 lead over SNU. The Storm got one back in the bottom of the fourth as Kaley Knox scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 4-3.

SNU needed at least one in the final two innings, and they got one in the sixth when Sauer singled up the middle to score James to tie it at 4-4. The game went to extra innings and the Muleriders scored one in the top of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead, and the Storm couldn't make any noise in the bottom half of the inning.
