SEARCY, Ark. — Southern Nazarene was in for the long haul Saturday with just over two games scheduled Saturday, but did take one game of the four-game set with No. 17 Harding in a 5-1 win in the final game of the series.
Â
After the Crimson Storm (10-18, 7-11 GAC) wrapped up the suspended game from Friday, as it lost 4-3, SNU fell 1-0 in the first scheduled game for Saturday before pulling off the upset in the finale over the Bisons (23-7, 15-5 GAC).
Â
SNU opened the day where it left off Friday with a 4-1 deficit in the top of the fifth. The Storm cut into the lead in the top of the seventh with one out when
Victoria Rodriguez drew a bases loaded walk to make it 4-2.
Kai Sanchez made it 4-3 when she hit a sacrifice fly to center to score
Riley Brown, but that was as close as SNU came.
Â
Mahina Sauer (0-3) took the loss after giving up two runs, one earned, in the start. She struck out one in three innings pitched.Â
Kriston Shumaker and Brown each went 2-for-3.
Sydni Toilolo also went 2-for-4.
Â
The Storm were held to just two hits in the second game as
Jacey James and Rodriguez were each 1-for-2.
Katelyn Brown (6-10) did not give up a run until the bottom of the sixth, and it was not earned, but that was all the Bisons needed. The senior allowed just four hits and struck out six.
Â
In the final game, SNU struck first in the top of the first on a sacrifice squeeze by
Riley Brown to give SNU a 1-0 lead. The Bisons tied it in the bottom of the second, but the Storm retook the lead at 2-1 in the top of the third on another sac squeeze as Sauer laid down the bunt to score
Cheyenne Reynolds. Â SNU added two more in the fifth when
Katelyn Brown ripped a double down the left field line to give the Storm a 4-1 lead. SNU got an insurance run in the seventh thanks to a Harding error to score the final run.
Â
Brooke Tate and
Katelyn Brown didn't need much room as the two combined for just one  run allowed. Tate moved to 3-2 on the year after she got the start and scattered five hits in the first four innings. Brown recorded her first save of the year as the senior did not allow a hit and faced the minimum three batters in the final three innings.
Â
The Storm's 1, 2 and 4 hitters went a combined 6-for-10 as SNU had nine hits as a team.
Katelyn Brown went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored while Sauer went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Kaley Knox also went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Reynolds scored two runs while going 2-for-3 with a triple.
