Perez Breaks Stolen Base Record

Junior sets school all-time stolen record in doubleheader loss

BETHANY, Okla. — Garrett Perez became the Southern Nazarene's all-time leader in stolen bases after junior stole one base in each game of a doubleheader against Harding Saturday.

Perez moved to 41 stolen bases in his career to pass current Assistant Coach Chase Glaum.

The Bisons (14-16, 7-11 GAC) though swept the doubleheader and the series with a pair of wins over the Crimson Storm (9-17, 5-13 GAC) as Harding won 13-6 in the opener and 6-3 in the second game.

In the opener, Harding jumped on the board immediately by starting the game with three straight singles and a sacrifice fly to score two. The Bisons added another to push the lead to 3-0 in the top of the first. Harding scored four more in the second to take a 7-0 lead.

SNU got on the board in the bottom of the second when Tanner Maskey ripped a single up the middle to cut it to 1-0 before Jake Vernon and Perez each singled to the left side to push two more run across as the Storm got it to 7-3.

The Bisons pushed to 8-3 with one in the top of the third and added another in the fourth to lead 9-3. Harding added two more insurance runs in the top of the eighth to lead 11-3 before adding two more in the ninth to increase the lead to 13-3.

SNU tried to mount a rally by scoring three in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't overcome the 10-run deficit.

Jefferson Harris (1-3) took the loss after giving up eight runs on seven hits in the start. Joe Toilolo went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Vernon went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Perez also drove in a run while going 2-for-5.

Harding jumped out in front on the nightcap as well as it scored four in the second. SNU got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with three to cut it to 4-3. One pitch after Perez set the school record for career stolen bases, Cole Lee laced a double down the left field line to score two. Shelby Reese drove home the final run of the inning with a single to short to cut it to 4-3. The Bisons though scored two in the top of the seventh and shut down the Storm in the final inning to pick up the win.

David Gustafson (3-5) took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits. He struck out two in five innings of work. All eight of SNU's hits came from 1-6 in the lineup as Cooper led the way by going 3-for-4.
