BOLIVAR, Mo. - Senior
Pedro Garcia converted a penalty kick in the 108th minute to give the Southern Nazarene men's soccer team a huge 2-1 win extra time win over Southwest Baptist to close out the regular season on Tuesday night.
The Crimson Storm held a 16-13 advantage in shots including an 11-4 advantage in shots on target. SNU also held a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks in the match.
It was an even match up all throughout the first half with SNU holding a slight 5-4 edge in shots. Despite some chances throughout the first half from both sides, both
Reagan Haydon of SNU and Ian Martin of SBU kept their sheets clean through one half.
It seemed to be more of the same throughout the second half with SBU holding the shot advantage this time at 7-4. It looked the two teams would go into extra time scoreless until the 82nd minute as a Bearcat foul in the box gave the Crimson Storm their first PK.
Junior
Cristian Hernandez came through with the first goal of the contest and SNU took a 1-0 lead late in the contest. However, the lead was short lived as Southwest Baptist answered in the 86th minute as Isaiah Waddy evened the match.
As the match moved to extra time, SNU began to dominate the match, out shooting the Bearcats 7-2 in the two extra frames. Neither team could find a goal in the first 10 minutes of extra time, and just as it looked as if a draw was on the horizon, another foul in the box set up the game winning PK from Garcia.
Hernandez, senior
Marcel Joseph, and freshman
Angel Lopez had three shots each as well as two on target while junior
Erik Fernandez and freshman
Sydney Oliver each had two shots. Haydon finished with three saves in the contest to earn the win in goal.
