BETHANY - After a goal by
Karsyn Matthews to even the match, a goal in the 79th minute from Calvonis Prentice, her second of the game, gave the Northwestern Oklahoma State a 2-1 win over Southern Nazarene on Thursday evening at Wes Harmon Field in Bethany.
For the Crimson Storm, they fall to 3-13 overall and 2-8 in the GAC.
Northwestern held a slight advantage in shots at 17-13, but SNU had more shots on target with eight to the Rangers' seven. NWOSU held a huge advantage in corners at 6-0 and also had a 7-5 edge in saves on the night.
It was an even first half as both teams saw some chances at goal with neither side able to break through. Freshman
Micaela Owen had two saves in the first half as each team went to the locker room looking to adjust going into the second half.
The Rangers found that break through first as Prentice beat the keeper from the near post to give Northwestern the 1-0 lead in the 50th minute. Northwestern would follow with two shots on target in the next eight minutes, but Owens came away with the saves to keep the deficit at one.
SNU began to ramp up their attack as it got later in the match. Matthews would find an opening and fire at goal. Her initial shot would be saved, but she would follow her shot and find an opening to the far post to even the match at one a piece in the 75th minute.
Moments later, Prentice struck again for her second goal of the game to put the Rangers right back on top at 2-1. SNU would battle for possession and looks at goal in the final 12 minutes, but could not find the equalizer as the final whistle blew.
Matthews led the attack with four shots including three on target while
DeLaney Stewart added three shots.
Kylee Payne and
Kelsi Bussert each had two shots while
Ashley Owens and
Katie Alexander each had one. Owens finished with five saves in net in the loss.
Southern Nazarene will close their season on Saturday as they welcome in Southwestern Oklahoma State for Senior Night. The festivities will kick off 15 minutes prior to the match with first kick set for 6 p.m.
