Storm withstand late run from Southern Arkansas on road

MAGNOLIA, Ark. — It took Jhonathan Dunn scoring a season-high for the second straight night as the sophomore had 27 points in a 62-60 scare at Southern Arkansas for No. 15/16 Southern Nazarene.

The Crimson Storm (16-1, 13-0 GAC) have won 12 straight and nine consecutive on the road. Dunn added five rebounds, three assist and two steals while going 10-for-21 from the field. Two other players were in double figures in scoring as Micah Speight had 13 and Quaylon Newton had 10. Speight added four rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Newton had seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks.

SNU trailed just once early in the first half before taking a 28-21 lead at the break. Storm opened the second half with 15-3 run to lead 43-24, its largest lead of the game. The Muleriders (11-8, 7-6 GAC) though used a 27-10 run to cut the deficit to at 53-51 with 2:36 to play.

The Storm pushed it to 56-51 with 1:11 remaining, but the Muleriders wouldn't go away quietly. SAU cut it to 56-53 with a bucket before the Storm pushed it back to 58-53 on a pair of Dunn free throws. Southern Arkansas got a trey from C.J. Elkins with 15 seconds left to make it 58-56, but Dunn nailed two more free throws to lead 60-56. Elkins again dialed one in from deep to make it 60-59 with 11 seconds left, but that was as close as SAU came though as the Storm got two more free throws from Speight to seal it.

SNU was 11-for-15 from the line while Dunn was 4-for-5 and Speight was 5-for-6. The Storm were held to its lowest field goal percentage of the year at 39.3. Southern Nazarene was also held to fewer than four 3-pointers for just the second time this year. The Storm were 3-for-14 from downtown. SNU turned it over just 12 times and held SAU to 23-for-69 shooting from the field. The Muleriders also struggled at the line going just 7-for-16. The Storm scored 17 points off 16 SAU turnovers while giving up just two points off turnovers.
