OKLAHOMA CITY — Southern Nazarene snapped a seven-game losing streak Tuesday evening with an 8-5 win at crosstown rival Oklahoma Christian.
Zach Birkle allowed just three baserunners in six innings of relief. The freshman allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out four as he picked up his first win of the year to move to 1-1. Birkle's two hits given up were all the hits OC had as it scored five runs in the first four innings on an error and 11 walks.
Jefferson Harris and
Anthony Wiggins led the way for SNU as Harris went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two walks while Wiggins went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
SNU jumped on Oklahoma Christian early as
Tyler Stevens drove home the first run with a ground out to first to push
Garrett Perez across the plate in the top of the first. The Storm made it 2-0 in the second when Perez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score
Ryan Tucker.
The Eagles though scored four in the bottom of the second to take their first lead at 4-2, but SNU fought back with one in the top of the fourth.
Jefferson Harris ripped a double to left to cut it to 4-3, but OC answered in the bottom half of the inning to push it to 5-3. That was all the offense Oklahoma Christian had the rest of the way as Birkle shut down the Eagles' bats from there.
Southern Nazarene rallied in the top of the seventh with three as
Anthony Wiggins drove home the first run with a double to right field. A
Mike Descisciolo single and an OC error tied the game before a wild pitch scored
Dalen Edgar and gave the Storm the lead for good at 6-5. SNU added two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth on OC's third error of the game to make it 8-5.
The win takes SNU to 4-33 on the year.
