Storm Lose Two in Bentonville

SNU lost 8-1 to the Cardinals and 5-1 to the Tigers

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Southern Nazarene fell 8-1 to William Jewell and 5-1 to Fort Hays State in its first two games of the UAM 8-State Classic Friday afternoon.

In the opener, William Jewell struck first as it scored one run in the top of the first. The Cardinals loaded the bases with one out and drew a walk to put that first run on the board. The Storm were able to escape the inning by only allowing the one run after getting an inning-ending double-play.

The Cardinals added two runs in the top of the fifth to make it 3-0 before Southern Nazarene loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning with no outs, but came up empty-handed and hit into a double play to end the inning.

William Jewell made it 6-0 in the top of the sixth after scoring one run off of a wild pitch and two more off of a two-run home run.

The Cardinals tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh before SNU got on the board in the bottom half. Amy Reynolds hit a one-out single to left field and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. Cheyenne Woodward pinch ran for Amy Reynolds and scored on a Mahina Sauer RBI double to left center. That's the only run the Storm were able to get though.

Southern Nazarene finished the game with five hits, leaving three on base. Sauer finished 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI double.

Katelyn Brown (1-2) took the loss after she gave up three runs, on seven hits in four innings of work. She also walked four and struck out two.

In the nightcap, the Storm struggled to bring any runs across the plate against Fort Hays.

Fort Hays jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as it scored one run in the bottom of the first and added another run in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead.

FHSU got its final three runs of the game in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead before Southern Nazarene got their lone run of the game in the fifth inning. Jacey James led the inning with a walk and was moved into scoring position after a Logan Sundbye sacrifice bunt moved James over to second. Sam Smith knocked James in after hitting a hard single to right center. The Storm couldn't manage to score any more runs as they were held hitless in the final two innings.

Smith went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and an RBI.

Brooke Tate (0-2) got the loss after she allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits, while striking out four in five innings of work. Brown came in and pitched one perfect inning of relief, retiring all three batters she faced.
