Storm Take Loss at Monticello

SNU opens 2017 with loss on the road

MONTICELLO, Ark. — Southern Nazarene led by as much as nine in the second half against undefeated Arkansas-Monticello, but turnovers caught up to SNU in a 74-61 loss on the road.
 
The loss snaps a four-game streak for the Crimson Storm (6-5, 3-2 GAC) who had 22 turnovers. The Weevils (9-0, 5-0 GAC), who received votes in the latest NABC Division II Poll scored 22 points off of SNU's turnovers.
 
C.J. White led the way for SNU with 15 points and eight rebounds. The senior went 7-for-9 from the floor. Darryl Gaynor II finished with 14 points has he was 6-for-9 from the field. LB Willis added 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists. SNU shot 45.5 percent from the field, but struggled from beyond the arc as it went 3-for-15. SNU was also 8-for-14 at the line.
 
The Storm out rebounded UAM 42-37, but gave up 16 offensive rebounds for 12 second-chance points. The Weevils were just 10-for-34 in the first half, but bounced back in the second half to shoot 57.1 percent.
 
Southern Nazarene opened the game on a 7-0 run and led the entire first half. The Storm led 20-17 with 5:59 left in the half when Noah Starkey started an 11-5 run to end the half and give SNU its biggest lead of the half at 31-22 to head into the break.
 
The Storm led by as much as nine in the second half and were up 38-29 with 17:16 to play when the Weevils went on a 21-8 run to take their first lead of the game and extend the lead to 50-46 with 9:29 left. The Storm cut it to one twice at 50-49 and at 54-53 with the latter coming at the 5:50 mark. Monticello though used a 17-4 run over the next three minutes to put the Storm away.
