Second Quarter Dooms Storm

SNU falls 84-67 at Arkansas-Monticello

MONTICELLO, Ark. — Adrienne Berry matched a career-high with 24 points as Southern Nazarene fell 84-67 at Arkansas-Monticello.
 
Berry and Abby Boyd combined for 43 points and eight 3-pointers on the night, as each hit four. Berry added seven rebounds while Boyd chipped in three boards and two assists. Chelseah Savage was the only other SNU player in double-figures scoring as she added 11 points with six assists.
 
The Storm (6-18, 5-16 GAC) led 17-15 after the first quarter thanks to eight early points from Berry. SNU shot 41.2 percent from the field and 3-of-4 from deep in the first quarter.
 
The wheels came off in the second quarter, as UAM held Southern Nazarene to 28.6 percent shooting. On the other end of the spectrum, the Cotton Blossoms shot 64.3 percent during the second period and 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. SNU struggled to hang on to the ball in the quarter as it committed 10 turnovers en route to being outscored 29-9 in the second. By halftime, the Storm trailed 44-26.
 
Both teams shot well coming out of the intermission as SNU shot 50 percent in the third quarter while Arkansas-Monticello shot 46.2 percent in the third. Berry scored 14 in the period, but five more Southern Nazarene turnovers kept the Storm from narrowing the gap.
 
The Crimson Storm outscored the Cotton Blossoms in the fourth quarter, led by 11 points from Boyd, but the hole proved to be too deep to climb out of.
 
On the night, Southern Nazarene shot its best percentage from beyond the arc on the season as it connected on 52.9 percent of its shots from deep. Turnovers proved to be the deciding factor as SNU committed 21 turnovers that led to 23 UAM points. Monticello got a huge boost from its bench as the Cottom Blossoms outscored the Crimson Storm 18-7 in bench scoring.
