Putting the Bison Out to Pasture

Southern Nazarene holds off OBU late

BETHANY, Okla. — For the first time since the 2006-07 season, Southern Nazarene swept a season series from Oklahoma Baptist after SNU picked up a 75-73 win over OBU Monday night in the Sawyer Center.

The Crimson Storm (11-13, 10-8 GAC) had not played a season series with the Bison (6-16, 2-16 GAC) since the 2011-12 season when both were members of the Sooner Athletic Conference. The win pushes SNU's record inside the Sawyer Center to 8-2 on the year.

Deshon Portley and Garrett Butler led the way as the two combined for 38 points. Portley scored a career-high 20 points with 10 coming at the line. The junior went 10-for-11 from the line and went 4-for-8 from the field. He also went 2-for-3 from 3-point range. Butler finished with 18 points on the night as he was 5-for-9 from downtown and went 3-for-4 at the line. C.J. Rodriguez added 16 points as he went 8-for-13 from the charity stripe.

The Storm shot 35.7 percent from the field and went 8-for-20 from 3-point range.

After four lead changes through the first nine minutes of the game, Deshon Portley got bookend free throws on an 18-5 run to take a 32-20 lead with 4:10 left in the first. The Storm took their biggest lead of the half at 40-26 with 40 seconds left in the half and led 40-28 at the break.

The Storm led 55-42 with 11:11 left, but the Bison answered with a 9-1 run to cut it to 56-51 with 9:26 to play. SNU pushed it back to 61-51 on a Hukill trey and a Rodriguez fast break layup, but OBU responded with an 11-3 run to cut it to 64-62 with 3:08 to play. The Bison cut it to two points two more times, but that was as close as they came.
