SNU falls for the seventh time in eight games

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Despite leading 22-18 after the first quarter and 47.4 percent in the opening frame, Southern Nazarene fell 88-78 on the road to Southwestern Oklahoma State.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair with neither team able to gain any separation. Both teams traded buckets as neither team had a run of more than three points in the opening period.

The second quarter proved to be the dagger for the Crimson Storm (5-15, 4-13 GAC). After the Bulldogs started the quarter on an 8-2 run, SNU went the final 6:23 without a point as Southwestern finished the first half on a 17-0 run. By intermission, SWOSU had a 44-29 lead. Southern Nazarene shot 3-of-23 for the frame and 1-of-10 from beyond the arc while committing six turnovers.

Southern Nazarene tried to get back into the game in the second half, but was never able to get within single-digits the rest of the game. The Crimson Storm shot 44.4 percent from deep in the second half and forced the Bulldogs into 13 turnovers after intermission, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome.

Rachel Doerneman registered the first double-double of her career as she scored 17 points on 8-of-16 shooting and hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds. Abby Boyd scored a team-high 18 points while adding two assists and two steals.

Southwestern Oklahoma State built a large advantage near the basket as the Bulldogs outscored the Crimson Storm 40-22 in the paint. SWOSU did a good job getting to the line as well, shooting 22-of-31 from the free-throw line while SNU attempted just 16 shots from the charity stripe.
