SNU sweeps OBU to close out regular season

BETHANY, Okla. — Thursday night was tailor made for Senior Night inside the Sawyer Center as four of the five seniors combined for 46 of SNU's 54 kills in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 27-25) sweep of Oklahoma Baptist.

The win over the Bison (17-13, 11-5) was the first for Head Coach Kevin Ingram in his career. The Crimson Storm (17-13, 11-5) had lost 13 straight against Oklahoma Baptist dating back to the 2008 season when OBU reinstated its program. The win also secured the third seed in the Great American Conference Championships for SNU.

McKenna Qualls finished the regular season with a .414 clip as she had 14 kills and three blocks while Kaitlyn Vought had her second straight double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. She also had three blocks. Courtney Bowie had 11 kills and a block. Lexie Matthews also had nine kills and seven digs. Abbey Bell rounded out the five seniors with a match-high 21 digs. Elyse Berlin had 50 assists and seven digs in the match as well. Bailee Turang also chipped in with 14 digs.

The Storm as a team hit .267 (54-18-135) and out dug the Bison 72-58. SNU also had five blocks.

The Crimson Storm came out swinging in the first set as they hit .459 (19-2-37) and were passed by Kaitlyn Vought's six kills in the set. Lexie Matthews, McKayla Benner, McKenna Qualls and Courtney Bowie all had three as well. Elyse Berlin had 18 assists in the first set alone.

It was much of the same in the second set as Qualls had five kills in the second set. Bowie had four and started a 10-1 run with a kill as SNU took a 17-9 lead. SNU cruised from there to lead 2-0. There were 16 ties and eight lead changes in the third set and neither team led by more than two until SNU broke a 15-15 tie with a Qualls kill to start a 4-1 run to lead 19-16. OBU answered with a 5-2 run to tie it at 21 and the two tied four more times until Turang and Bowie got back-to-back kills to close it out.
