Muleriders Hold Off Storm

Southern Nazarene cuts it close in fourth, falls short in the end

MAGNOLIA, Ark. — For the second straight week, SNU raised eyebrows, at least for a brief moment, as it tried to close on Southern Arkansas, but SAU picked up the 37-20 win.

The Crimson Storm (0-5, 0-5 GAC) had their highest scoring effort of the year as Jacob Spady had a season-high 162 yards passing. The sophomore was 14-for-27 on the night with a touchdown. He used eight different receivers as Zach Walker was his favorite target as he had three catches for 49 yards. Spady also led the team in rushing with 42 yards on 13 carries.

SNU as a team had 106 yards rushing and 162 passing for 268 total yards. The Muleriders (4-1, 4-1 GAC) had 544 yards of offense with 248 coming on the ground and 296 through the air.

Breyon Jackson led SNU with eight tackles while Damion Willis and Josh Jordan each had seven. Zack Loyd also had five tackles and a sack.

The Muleriders took the first lead of the game on a safety with just 46 seconds left in the first. Southern Arkansas extended it to 9-0 early in the second and pushed it to 16-0 with 3:46 left in the half. The Crimson Storm didn't go into the half with the scoreboard blank though as Jacob Spady hit Trevor Smith for a 38-yard strike to make it 16-6 with 1:45 left in the half. The touchdown came on the sixth play of the 81-yard drive.

SAU pushed its lead to 23-6 with 6:19 left in the third, but SNU answered with back-to-back field goal from Carlos Anguiano to make it 23-12 early in the fourth. The first field goal came with 4:04 left in the third with a 30-yard boot before his second from 34 yards out with 13:46 left.

Southern Arkansas took a 30-12 lead with 7:55 to play, but the Crimson Storm didn't go away lightly. Terence Olds capped a 4-play, 31-drive, and converted on the 2-point conversion to make it 30-20. The drive converted a Derrick Carmouche interception that left the Storm deep into Mulerider territory before Olds finally punched it in.

On the kickoff, SNU tried an onside kick, but SAU recovered and put the finishing touches on the game when they used just four plays to drive 36 yards and made it 37-20.
