Ruining the Reddies on the Road

SNU starts second half of GAC season with a road win at Henderson State

ARKADELLPHIA, Ark. — Southern Nazarene held Henderson State to just 37.3 percent shooting from the field and 3-for-16 from 3-point range as SNU picked up its second road win in three tries with a 73-61 victory over the Reddies.

The win breaks a two-game skid by the Crimson Storm (8-10, 7-5 GAC) and it was also the first season series sweep over the Reddies (4-13, 3-9 GAC) since joining the Great American Conference in the 2012-13 season.

CJ Rodriguez led the way for SNU as the senior scored 20 points on the night going 6-for-12 from the field and 4-for-8 from 3-point range. He was also a perfect 4-for-4 at the line. LB Willis added 15 points with 11 of those coming at the line in 13 free-throw attempts. He also had seven rebounds and three assists. Anton Kankaanpaa also added 10 points and five rebounds, going 4-for-6 form the field and 2-for-3 from 3-point range.

The Storm shot 43.9 percent from the field and were 7-for-20 from 3-point range. SNU went 5-for-11 from beyond the arc in the first half before going just 2-for-9 in the second half. Southern Nazarene made the most of every Reddie turnover as it scored 22 points off of HSU's 14 miscues.

Henderson State held a few early leads, but took its last at 10-9 with 9:34 to play in the first half. A Rodriguez three propelled SNU on a 25-12 run in the final nine minutes of the half to give the Storm a 34-22 lead with 27 seconds left. The Storm took a 34-23 lead into the break, but the Reddies closed it to 36-30 with 17:39 left. A pair of Willis free throws ignited a 17-4 run capped by a Garrett Butler jumper to give the Storm their biggest lead of the night at 53-34 with 11:32 remaining. Henderson State never got the lead back down under double digits as SNU was able to stop any run the rest of the way.
