Heartbreak in Edmond

Southern Nazarene dropped a heartbreaker in Edmond, losing 64-62 to Central Oklahoma

EDMOND, Okla. — After leading for the majority of the contest, Southern Nazarene fell just shy in its upset bid against Central Oklahoma, falling 64-62 on the road.

The Crimson Storm (2-5) led by as many as 11 midway through the third quarter and led by four at the end of the third quarter. However, the Bronchos forced eight Crimson Storm turnovers in the final period, including a steal with 28 seconds left. That steal led to the final bucket for the Bronchos, coming on a 16-foot jumper by Julia Mason with 2.6 seconds left to seal the win for Central Oklahoma.

Abby Boyd led the way for SNU as she scored 20 points and added four rebounds, two assists, and five steals on the night. Rachel Doerneman was in double-digits scoring for the third consecutive game and fourth time in five games as she added 13 points along with six rebounds. Doerneman came on late, as she scored eight points in the fourth quarter. LaShabra Plunkett was big on the defensive end for the Crimson Storm as she hauled in a season-high 14 rebounds and chipped in four blocks and two steals as well.

Turnovers plagued both teams on the night, as Southern Nazarene turned the ball over 20 times while Central Oklahoma gave it up 21 times. The two key advantages that helped the Bronchos fight back were points in the paint and free throws. UCO outscored SNU in the paint 22-16 and missed just one free throw in the second half, going 10-of-11 after halftime.

The Bronchos held a slight advantage shooting the ball as well, as they shot 40 percent from the field and 42 percent from 3-point range. The Crimson Storm, on the other hand, shot just 38.1 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc.
