Junior has career night at Southeastern as Storm push towards the final week of GAC play

DURANT, Okla. — Coming into the year, Southern Nazarene felt it had plenty of depth and had a chance to beat teams in multiple ways. That was true as SNU had career-high from one of the five different players who have led SNU in kills this year to pick up a 3-2 (25-18, 26-28, 23-25, 26-24, 15-9) win at Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Kaitlyn Vought had a career-high 21 kills on the night and added 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Vought was one of four Crimson Storm (14-15, 10-4 GAC) with double-figure kills as she combined with Courtney Bowie, McKayla Benner and Lexie Matthews for 57 of SNU's 68 kills. Bowie had 15 kills and four blocks while Benner had 11 kills and Matthews had 10 kills. Benner also had a career-high seven blocks while Matthews had 12 digs, four aces and two blocks.

Elyse Berlin tied her career-high with 53 assists and added 15 digs and a pair of blocks. McKenna Qualls had three of SNU's nine aces and Abbey Bell had 27 of the team's 91 digs. Hannah Davis also added 13 digs. SNU as a team also had 10 blocks.

In the first set there were four early ties before SNU broke a 10-10 tie with an 11-4 run capped by a Bowie kill as the Crimson Storm jumped out to a 21-14 lead. Southern Nazarene held on from there to take the first set, but the Savage Storm answered in the second set. Southeastern Oklahoma State didn't trail until SNU went on a 6-0 run to lead 21-18 in the second. The Crimson Storm pushed it to 24-21 before SOSU scored three straight to tie it at 24. SNU had set point twice at 25-24 and 26-25, but Southeastern scored three straight to tie the match at 1-1.

In the third set, SOSU (6-20, 4-9 GAC)  used a 7-1 run to jump out to a 14-9 lead, but the Crimson Storm answered with a 7-2 run to tie it at 16. Southeastern pushed it to set point at 24-19 before SNU scored four straight to cut it to 24-23. The Savage Storm though got the final kill and took a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Crimson Storm didn't go away though as Vought had seven of her kills in the final two sets. She had three kills in the fourth set and four in the fifth. There were eight ties in the fourth set and neither team led by more than three until Southeastern went on a 9-1 run to lead 14-9. SNU answered with a 9-2 run to take an 18-16 lead and it stayed tight through the rest of the set. SNU had match point at 24-22, but SOSU scored two straight to tie it at 24. SNU then got a Matthews kill and a Southeastern error to tie the match and force the fifth set.

SNU had just two errors in the final set as it hit .381. The Crimson Storm trailed just once in the set and that was at 1-0 before Vought sparked a 7-2 run to lead 7-3. The Savage Storm closed to 10-9, but four straight kills, two from Bowie and two from Vought, put the match away.
