BETHANY, Okla. — After picking up a victory in its previous game over Oklahoma Baptist, Southern Nazarene had a chance to move into fourth place in the Great American Conference with a win over East Central. SNU did not waste this opportunity, using tough defense and a timely goal to notch a 1-0 victory over East Central on Senior Day, putting them in the driver's seat for the final spot in the GAC Conference Tournament.
Â
The Crimson Storm (7-9-0, 4-6-0 GAC) entered the game tied with the Tigers for fourth place, needing a win to earn the tie-breaker. Though SNU outshot the Tigers 12-2 in the first half and 17-3 through the first 64 minutes, the Crimson Storm had nothing to show for it. However, a shot by
Kelsi Bussert in the 65
th minute got a good bounce off the crossbar with the ball barely sneaking across the line to give SNU a 1-0 lead.
Â
That would be enough for the Crimson Storm, thanks to the defense contributing its second shutout of the week and sixth of the season. The Tigers had a chance to tie the game in the final minute of the game, but a shot by Lexie DeVore sailed over the goal with 45 seconds left to ice the game.
Â
Natasha Fuentes tallied four saves on the day, three of which came in the second half. The Crimson Storm outshot the Tigers 20-6 on the game, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Sierra Price recorded an assist on the goal by Bussert, her second assist of the year.
