SHAWNEE, Okla. — Badly needing a victory after dropping two consecutive Great American Conference matchups, Southern Nazarene was able to edge out Oklahoma Baptist with a 1-0 victory.
Â
The Crimson Storm (6-9-0, 3-6-0 GAC) found themselves in a tough match all night, with both teams scoreless well into the first half. However,
Kelsi Bussert changed that with her fifth goal of the season in the 35
th minute, giving the Storm a 1-0 lead.
Â
That was all SNU would need, thanks to a stout defensive effort.
Natasha Fuentes tallied six saves on the night and recorded her fourth shutout of the season. The shutout also moved Fuentes into fifth place all-time in SNU history with 12 career shutouts.
Â
Both teams were evenly matched throughout most of the match, with the Bison barely edging out the Crimson Storm 13-10 in shots, though both teams landed six shots on goal. Oklahoma Baptist had a chance to tie the score with a corner kick in the final minute of the match, but a shot by Sade Alaka sailed high with just 30 seconds left to seal the game.
Â
Bussert led the Crimson Storm on the offensive end, taking two shots and landing both on goal. Also recording shots on goal for SNU were
Brianna Evans,
Alyssa Glitzke,
Shanae Vasquez, and
Stephanie Ledgerwood.
