Sweeping Through the Blossoms

SNU sweeps Arkansas-Monticello on the road

MONTICELLO, Ark. — The streak has now moved to five straight wins in the Great American Conference for Southern Nazarene after a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 26-24) sweep by SNU over Arkansas-Monticello Friday night.

The Crimson Storm (10-12, 6-2) hit .248 (46-16-121) and had two players in double-figure kills. Kaitlyn Vought led the way with 14 kills and hit .370 while added six digs, a block and an ace. McKayla Benner had 12 kills and hit .333. She also had two blocks. Elyse Berlin recorded her team-leading 10th double-double with 41 assists and 12 digs. She also had two blocks. Abbey Bell had a team-high 15 digs while Hannah Davis had 12.

Trailing 19-15 in the first set, SNU took advantage of three straight errors by the Cotton Blossoms (7-11, 1-7 GAC), but UAM clung to a late lead. Monticello led 22-20, but had three errors while Makenna Hunter had a kill and McKenna Qualls had an ace in a 5-1 run by the Storm to close out the first set.

Neither team led by more than three in the second set, until Qualls sparked a 9-2 run to take the set. SNU trailed 17-16, but a Qualls kill started the run and a Vought kill capped it. SNU trailed late in the third set as well and was down 21-19 when Vought ripped a kill to start a 4-1 run to put SNU up 23-22. After UAM tied it at 23 and 24, SNU got back-to-back kills from Benner and Courtney Bowie to take the match.
