SNU wins big in season opener

Box Score STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Southern Nazarene opened up the 2014 season in impressive fashion with a 10-2 drubbing of Emporia State Friday night in the Tarleton State Invitational.

SNU did a lot of damage with the top half of the order as all of the RBIs came in the top five spots in the lineup. Lindy Fluman went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored while Kylie Lang went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Megan Blevens and Andee Frazier both went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Blevens also scored a run. Hannah LeBeau also went 1-for-3 and drove in three runs. Whitney Linder scored a run while going 2-for-4.

"We really didn't know what to expect," said SNU Head Coach Tere Webber. "We haven't been on real dirt hardly and not having (Kacey) Acker along with a lot of new players  it could have gone a lot of different ways. We focused on good effort and carried over the good things we did in the cages. We didn't leave a lot on the bases. We couldn't have asked for a better start. There are a lot of positives."

Kayla Wyatt (1-0) was dominant in her first outing of the year as the sophomore gave up just two runs and seven hits while striking out eight in six innings of work. Ashley Potter closed the door in the seventh retiring all three batters she faced.

"She got a little shook in the beginning," said Webber of Wyatt. "She settled in though and pitched a great game."

SNU got started early with two runs in the first and three in the second to lead 5-0. Andee Frazier drove home the first two runs with a bases loaded, RBI single to right to score Fluman and Lang. Fluman then drove in two on a single to left center before she scored on a balk in the second.

ESU got on the board in the bottom of the third with a run, but the Storm answered with two more in the top of the fourth, including a sacrifice squeeze by LeBeau. The Hornets added another run to make it 7-2, but SNU scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh to put it away. LeBeau drove in two runs with a single to right in the sixth before Blevens hit a sac fly to center for the final run of the game

SNU now gets set to take on Northeastern State and Tarleton State Saturday at 5:30 and 8 p.m.
