So Close

Southern Nazarene just missed picking up its first win in two years

BETHANY, Okla. — The streak came so close to ending Saturday, but Southern Nazarene, playing in its first overtime game since 2008, just got edged 27-24 by Southwestern Oklahoma State in overtime.

The Crimson Storm (0-9, 0-9 GAC) had battled back from being down 21-14 at the half and scored with 1:46 to play to force overtime. SNU took its first lead since 14-7 when Ross Moore buried a 36-yard field goal to put the Storm on top 24-21, but the Bulldogs (3-6, 3-6 GAC) scored on a Karl Hodge 25-yard run to put it in the books.

SNU had chances inside the five in the second and third quarter, but the Bulldogs also came up with two big goal line stops each time.

Lorenzo Alexander ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries to lead the ground attack for the Storm. SNU used a dual quarterback threat as James Mauro returned for the first time after leaving the East Central game with an injury. James Mauro threw for 193 yards and a touchdown as he completed 10 of his 21 passing attempts. Laffoon threw the ball just four times, but ran for 28 yards on nine carries.

Matthew Gregg had 12 tackles and a sack on the night while Eric Kabeya had eight tackles and two sacks.

Southwestern Oklahoma State used just five plays after the opening kickoff to take a 7-0 lead, but the Storm answered right back with one play. James Mauro hit Myles Smith for a 71-yard strike on a flea flicker to knot it at 7-7 with 12:26 left in the first.

Southern Nazarene took its first lead of the game at 14-7 on a 2-yard run by Lorenzo Alexander. That run capped a 10-play, 48-yard drive with 13:01 left in the first. The Bulldogs though put together a game-tying drive and blocked a punt late in the half to take a 21-14 lead into the half.

Alexander then capped a 64-yard drive, that included a 60-yard pass from Mauro to Austin Williams, with a one-yard run to tie it at 21.
