Southern Nazarene upset No. 4 Angelo State in the season opener

Lambert gave up just two runs total to the Lone Star Conference preseason favorite.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DURANT, Okla. — Taking down a top five team in NCAA Division II is one heck of a way to open the 2013 season and Southern Nazarene did just that with a 6-2 win over No. 4 Angelo State (Texas) before falling 9-4 to St. Mary's in the second game of the day.

It didn't take Amy Madden long to pick up in the NCAA ranks where she left off in the NAIA. The senior ripped her first home of the season in the season opener as she went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Kaylee Allen also notched a home run as the sophomore went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

SNU scored three runs right out of the gate as the Storm took advantage of two Angelo State errors and also had two RBI singles from Megan Blevens and Madden. ASU cut the lead to 3-2 with one in the second and one in the fourth before a two run shot by Madden gave the Storm a 5-2 lead in the fifth. Allen's home run in the sixth put it away as the Storm opened the season on top.

Maci-Brooke Lambert picked up the win after she allowed just one earned run on six hits in seven innings of work.

In the nightcap, two errors in the third allowed four unearned runs and that was all St. Mary's really needed. Jill Clemence and Kylie Lang went a combined 5-for-8 in the game as Clemence went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Lang went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Kaytie Spencer was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored while Wiley also went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

St. Mary's took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before a Madden double gave the storm the lead in the bottom half of the inning at 2-1. The Rattlers added three in the second before a Lindy Fluman single cut the lead to 4-3 at the end of the second. St. Mary's added four in the third to lead 8-3 and SNU just got one more run in the fifth on a Wiley double to make it 8-4. The Rattlers added one more in the seventh to put it away.

Jeneva Nelson took the loss after giving up eight runs, four earned, on eight hits in 2.2 innings of work. Becca Webb threw the final 4.1 innings and allowed just one run on one hit.

The Crimson Storm, now 1-1 on the season, get set to play Western Missouri and Washburn, Saturday, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
