Storm Fall Short at Midwestern State

Southern Nazarene couldn't slow down the Mustangs offensive attack in an 89-80 loss

Box Score WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Callee Cox scored a career high 25 points but Southern Nazarene didn't have enough firepower to come back in an 89-80 loss at No. 10 Midwestern State.
 
The entire first half was back and forth as neither team could gain any separation over the other. The Storm (1-2) took a 31-28 lead with 6:07 to play in the half when Kristin Milster found Ashleigh Hutchings for a  3-pointer giving Hutchings her first points of the game. The Mustangs though, battled back. At the 5:38 mark Andrea Carter hit two free throws helping Midwestern State pull within one. Midwestern State then went on an 11-6 run to take a 43-37 lead into halftime.
 
The Storm shot 41 percent from the field in the first half and buried three shots from behind the arc. The Mustangs shot well on their home floor hitting 54 percent from the field and only had two turnovers.
 
Midwestern State (2-2)  started to take control of the game in the second half taking a 66-48 lead with only 11:08 left to play. SNU, refused to go away though, with 5:38 left to play Danielle Gaddis found Cox for a jumper that pulled the Storm within nine trailing 74-65. Midwestern State gained control once again with an 84-75 lead with only 44 seconds to play. The Storm were able to make things interesting one last time after Cox hit another three and the Storm only trailed by five down 85-80. SNU had to start fouling to stop the clock and the Mustangs were able to bury four straight free throws to help seal the win.
 
SNU shot 43 percent from the field for the game and hit 11-of-16 free throws. Midwestern State shot 50 percent from the field and went 6-of-12 from behind the arc. The Storm turned it over 16 times compared to the Mustangs eight. Milster scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Storm and Aminata Fall pitched in seven points and 15 rebounds. Gaddis scored a career-high 12 points and pulled in four rebounds. Cox also hit a career-high five 3-pointers.
 
The Storm get back into action tomorrow night in Wichita Falls for a game versus Texas-Permian Basin, at 6 p.m.
