KINGSVILLE, Texas — Southern Nazarene opened its 2012 season with a taste of what to come in the near future by playing in the Javelina Softball Tournament at Texas A&M Kingsville. The Crimson Storm split games, knocking off Texas A&M International before falling to future Great American Conference opponent, Southeastern Oklahoma State, 5-0.
In the opener,
Kaci Crawford and
Jeneva Nelson (1-0) combined for the win as Crawford gave up just one run and scattered five hits. She also struck out four before handing the game over to freshman,
Jeneva Nelson. The newcomer gave up just three hits in the final two innings to score the first win of her career.
Six different players recorded a hit and SNU took advantage of two Dustdevil errors to scored the win. Texas A&M International struck first in the top of the second and SNU waited until the sixth to strike back. Freshman
Jill Clemence led off the inning with a double to right center before being pushed to third on a Dustdevil error.
Kacey Acker drove in the first run with a one-out, ground ball to short to tie it at 1-1 with two outs.
Kristina Forest drove home the winning run when she doubled to left center to score
Amy Madden.
TAMIU put a runner on first with a one-out single in the seventh, but the Storm turned a double-play to end the game and score the season-opening win.
In the nightcap, the Savage Storm's Audra Rhudy tossed a complete-game shutout allowing just six hits and walked just two. Southeastern scored one in the third and added four in the fifth to take the win.
Kylie Lang was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
Maci-Brooke Lambert (0-1) allowed five runs on seven hits and fanned three in the loss.
SNU will now play a trio of games Saturday with back-to-back games against Midwestern State (Texas) and Texas A&M Kingsville at 1 and 3 p.m. and then will conclude the tournament with Tarleton State (Texas) at 9 p.m.
