LUBBOCK, Texas — Southern Nazarene nearly pulled off a split with No. 7 Lubbock Christian after falling 6-1 in the opener, but SNU lost a 5-1 lead in the seventh in the nightcap to lose 9-6 in the ninth.
The Crimson Storm (42-14, 16-10 SAC) were swept in a doubleheader for just the third time this year.
Lubbock Christian had already built a 6-0 lead in the opener before the Storm got on the board in the top of the seventh. The Lady Chaps scored one in each of the first, fourth and fifth innings before putting a three-spot on the board in the sixth to lead 6-0.
Katie Hale scored the first run of the game for the Storm with a solo home right field, but that was the only run for SNU.
Amy Madden had the only other hit for the Storm.
Jordan Simmons (19-6) took the loss after allowing six runs, three earned, on four hits in six innings of work. She also struck out two.
LCU's Meagan Navarrette gave up just one run on two hits as she tossed the complete game.
In the nightcap, Lubbock took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the second on a solo home run to left center, but the Storm tied it in the top of the third on an LCU wild pitch. SNU took the lead in the top of the fourth when
Keli Billups hit a solo home run to left field to put SNU up 2-1. The Storm added to the lead in the fifth when Hale hit a two-out single up the middle to score
Aubrey Jones as SNU led 3-1.
Kara Crawford pushed another run across in the fifth with a bunt before
Kristina Forest hit a sac fly to right in the sixth to give the Storm a 5-1 lead.
Lubbock Christian didn't go away quietly, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie it at 5-5 and forced extra innings. SNU got one back though in the top of the eighth when
Kacey Acker scored on a passed ball to give SNU a 6-5 lead, but LCU answered in the bottom half of the inning to tie at 6-6 and pushed the game to the ninth.
The Lady Chaps put it away with though in the ninth when Priscilla Fagaines hit a walk-off, three-run home to give LCU the win.
Kaci Crawford (20-6) took the loss after allowing nine runs, seven earned, on 12 hits and she struck out three. The junior had allowed just one run on five hits heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Billups went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Acker also went 2-for-4.
The Storm finish the season in fifth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference and will not prepare for the SAC Tournament, Friday and Saturday.
